 I N D E P E N D E N T   A R T I S T S

Independent Artists is a Rattle sub-label for independently produced albums that, for one reason or another, don't quite fit within exisiting Rattle frameworks. IA releases cover a broad range of musical styles and genres by artists of quality.

THE CAPITOL SESSIONS
The Rodger Fox
Wellington Jazz Orchestra
Under the artistic and musical direction of Rodger Fox, the Wellington Jazz Orchestra is arguably the tightest, brightest, most musically literate exponent of big band jazz this country has seen. Their debut recording, Journey Home (featuring compositions and arrangements by ex-pat jazz-giant, Alan Broadbent), won Best Jazz Album at the 2012 NZ Music Awards, but this second album raises the bar even higher.

The Capitol Sessions marks Rodger’s 40 years of unwavering commitment to big band jazz, and it’s only fitting that it should have been recorded in one of the world’s great studios. As John Fenton so aptly put it in his liner notes, Capitol Studios is an iconic studio, where the ghosts of Les Paul, Nat Cole and Frank Sinatra hover over every note.

DELAYED REACTION
Phil Broadhurst
DELAYED REACTION was inspired by (and is a tribute to) the life and work of Jazz maestro, Michel Petrucciani. This is Phil Broadhurst's first independent release since The Road Home seven years ago, and it was a finalist as Jazz Album of the Year at the 2011 New Zealand Music Awards.

"Delayed Reaction is the deepest, most sincere, most meaningful form of tribute that one musician can pay another. Petrucciani’s life-affirming spirit is unmistakably present here, but so too is Phil Broadhurst’s personal understanding of Petrucciani’s music and the new directions derived from it, which is surely the way Petrucciani would have wanted it.”

NGA TAE
Nga Tae
NGA TAE is the self-titled debut of a four piece ensemble featuring Richard Nunns, Paddy Free, Horomona Horo and Waimihi Hotere. The quality of this beautifully resonant album stems from the group's shared intuitive musical and cultural instinct.

“I’m always looking to work with the best. I’m also looking for people who play from their cultures. I was really impressed by Nga Tae recently at the Melbourne World Music Expo, featuring that wonderful pakeha who plays all the amazing Maori wood instruments... They floored me! One of the top ten performances I have ever seen in my life.”
Peter Noble, Director of Bluesfest Australia

OUR OWN SWEET WAY
Crayford Sellers Dyne
OUR OWN SWEET WAY features the considerable improvisational and swinging talent of Wellington-based jazz luminaries, Jonathan Crayford, Roger Sellers and Paul Dyne. The trio's enthusiasm for classic jazz of the 50s and 60s is palpable. They share an intimate knowledge of these tunes (and each other's playing), and their love for the music is undeniable. Recorded in Wellington by Richard Caigou, this fine album will appeal to listeners with an appreciation for classic jazz piano trio music.

THE BUCK STOPS HERE
Paul van Ross
THE BUCK STOPS HERE encapsulates the unique energy of a live performance, something that is hard to capture in the studio, all the more so it seems when the band is playing original compositions. By recording this album live, Paul van Ross sought to transport listeners to that night at the Paris Cat Jazz Club in Melbourne, to experience the atmosphere of the club, the energy and skill of the musicians, the buzz of the event, and most importantly.... the music.
