Ron Samsom

Ron is a leading musician and educator in the field of contemporary jazz. Among numerous award-winning achievements, he has featured on more than twenty recordings, earning an impressive, highly-regarded international reputation in jazz performance. Ron’s unique approach to drums has been in demand by many prominent musicians, and he recently featured with legendary tabla guru Fazal Qureshi, Grammy award-winning pianist Jim McNeely, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Ron is a member of FSH Trio (with Kevin Field and Olivier Holland, whose debut album Irony was the inaugural release of the Rattle Jazz Series in November, 2009), Samsom Nacey Haines (with Dixon Nacey and Kevin Haines, with whom he has released two albums on Rattle, Oxide and Cross Now), the Auckland powerhouse quartet Dog, winners of the 2015 Tui Award for Best Jazz Album for their self-titled Rattle debut as an ensemble, and as band-leader/composer for his funk quartet, Ron Samsom and the Neutrino Funk Experience, with whom he released Ace Tone on Rattle Jazz in July 2015, a gritty, no-holds-barred, infectious and highly enjoyable homage to 70s funk.
