Colin Hemmingsen 


Colin Hemmingsen has had a dual jazz/classical career for more than 30 years. He won a Downbeat scholarship for tenor saxophone in 1970 to study jazz at Berkeley College of Music, and was subsequently awarded a scholarship to New England Conservatory. There he completed a Masters degree in bassoon with Sherman Walt as his teacher. After teaching and performing in the United States, he returned to New Zealand to work as the principal bassoonist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra until 1992. Colin establish the country’s first jazz school and the New Zealand Jazz Foundation, and continues to work as a senior lecturer in jazz at the New Zealand School of Music.
